The Whole (Cell) Is Less Than the Sum of Its Parts
Despite advances in metabolite profiling, a full picture of the metabolic landscape of the cell has been limited by sub-cellular compartmentalization, which segregates distinct nutrient pools into membrane-bound organelles. Now, Chen et al. describe methods for overcoming this hurdle and provide a new quantitative picture of the mitochondrial metabolome.
متن کاملIs the Whole Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts?
e part-whole relationship routinely nds itself in many disciplines, ranging from collaborative teams, crowdsourcing, autonomous systems to networked systems. From the algorithmic perspective, the existing work has primarily focused on predicting the outcomes of the whole and parts, by either separate models or linear joint models, which assume the outcome of the parts has a linear and indepen...
متن کاملThe rod-and-frame effect: the whole is less than the sum of its parts.
Since the discovery of the influence of the tilted frame on the visual perception of the orientation perceived as vertical (VPV), the frame has been treated as a unitary object-a Gestalt. We evaluated the effect of 1-line, 2-line, 3-line, and 4-line (square frame) stimuli of two different sizes, and asked whether the influence of the square frame on VPV is any greater than the additive combinat...
متن کاملEnergetics of muscle contraction: the whole is less than the sum of its parts.
Understanding muscle energetics is a problem in optimizing supply of ATP to the demands of ATPases. The complexity of reactions and their fluxes to achieve this balance is greatly reduced by recognizing constraints imposed by the integration of common metabolites at fixed stoichiometry among modular units. ATPase is driven externally. Oxidative phosphorylation and glycogenolysis are the supplie...
متن کاملEvolution. In evolution, the sum is less than its parts.
1160 PERSPECTIVES P ropagating bacteria in a lab for thousands of generations may seem tedious, or even irrelevant, to most evolutionary biologists. Nonetheless, such experiments provide an opportunity to deduce quantitative principles of evolution and directly test them in controlled environments. Combined with modern sequencing technologies , as well as theory, recent microbial experiments ha...
